Thanksgiving started out as a harvest feast in 1621 that the Plymouth colonists shared with the Wampanoag people. Over time, it slowly tuned into a holidy that differnt colonies clebreated on their own. Then in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made it a national holiday, and later in 1941, Congress officially deiced it would be on the fourth Thursday of November. The original feast lasted three days, but the idea of Thanksgiving as a yearly holiday grew over many years before becoming what we celebrate today.

On the morning of Thanksgiving, George’s family had so many traditions. They would wake up on Thanksgiving morning and turn on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, cook the turkey, mashed potatoes, and so many more goodies. George’s mom, Kristen, tells George that she has forgotten to buy the turkey. George is extremely upset as he looks forward to making the turkey with his dad every year. Despite feeling down about the turkey that she has claimed to have “forgotten” to buy, George continues to watch the Thanksgiving parade. Kristen calls her mom, who is George’s Grandma and says, “Are you ready for the big surprise?” George is not able to see his grandparents as they live pretty far away. So his mom and grandma decided to surprise George and go visit them. Kristen tells George and George’s dad to hop in the car. He thinks that they are just headed to go to the store to go and find a turkey. Little does George know he is going to see his grandparents 5 hours later. After George realizes what is really happening, he is over the moon. After a while, they get to his grandparents’ house, and there is a turkey there waiting for George to be able to cook. The family sits down around the table and says this is the best Thanksgiving surprise they have ever had.

Halloween History

Halloween has evolved from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. This was a marker for the end of summer harvest and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31, the barrier separating the living and the dead would weaken, allowing the dead and supernatural to roam freely on Earth. The trend of costumes you see today originated from the Celts’ belief that wearing costumes protected them from being recognized by the returning spirits.

Scary Story

A new family had just moved into their new home, and in the attic, the father and daughter were unpacking unnecessary utilities. The daughter, Em, is shifting leftover boxes from the previous owners out of the corner. Lifting a box reveals an old, stained, and torn book; the cover reads “Diary”. Curious, she brings it to the not yet furnished office nook in their new home, sitting on a bean bag with just a reading lamp in the corner. In the dimly lit room, Em opens the diary. Seeing that it had belonged to various people. The last couple of pages consisted of detailed drawings of many others, with the dates becoming increasingly recent. Just as she was about to close the diary, the pages began rapidly turning all on their own, flipping to a blank page. Ink started to seep from a dark sea of black at the top of the pages, down the page forming the words, “You’re Next”. She shuts the diary and slams it to the floor in front of her feet. Pouncing up from the bean bag, she bolts for the door, but it shuts. She slowly turns around as she hears the sound of rapid pages turning. The diary has flipped back to the last page. Ink began to seep out of the pages into a puddle of black nothingness around the diary. The ink creeps closer and closer. The ink reaches her toes, and she freezes, staring down at it. Her reflection looks back at her. Her reflection tilts her head, but Em did not. Her reflection cracks a grin. Then, her reflection’s hand reaches from the black puddle, grabs Em’s ankle, and proceeds to pull her into the abyss. Attempting to hold on, Em loses her grip. Finally, Em emerges from the puddle, and the ink retreats back into the diary, which then shuts itself. Looking back at a replica of herself printed in the diary, she then places the diary back in the attic. Smiling at her portrait, which has a tear running down her cheek, she places it under the same box as before. But the only question that remains is, which Em came out of the ink?
