What is the goal/purpose of Model UN?
The goal or purpose of Model UN is to educate and engage its participants about the United Nations. It fosters skills in research, negotiations, social aspects, and leadership. The participants of Model UN, often referred to as delegates, must work together to solve global issues. You act as a representative from a country, which allows you to research, learn, and share information about that country.
Who runs MUN?
Model UN has appeared in many high schools across the globe due to the work of various governmental organizations. At Jackson, Model UN is advised by Ms Stone, a high school teacher. While Ms Stone is always willing to help, an actual Model UN conference is mainly individual, focusing on the amount of research a student has done and the effort they put into the experience.
What real-life skills are you learning in this club?
In Model UN, you learn how to communicate with strangers. It can be nerve-wracking at first, but you must speak with others, recognise perspective, and negotiate to better the world. You learn how to make connections and friends that will last a lifetime. Model UN teaches responsibility, as you must be accountable for the work you have put into the experience, while sharing your work with others to persuade and negotiate. Also, Model UN keeps you updated on global issues. It is hard to know everything that’s going on in the world, so researching a small portion and hearing other perspectives from other delegates is truly interesting.
Who is allowed to join MUN?
Any student at Jackson Local High School is allowed to join Model UN! All are welcome, and we encourage you to join! Model UN is composed of a diverse group of students who are interested in global issues and perspectives.
What are the benefits of joining this club?
The benefits of joining Model UN are that it’s educational, fun, and keeps you on your feet. Model UN participants are honoured to have the opportunities they do, like traveling to conferences in New York City and prestigious universities. Model UN allows you to meet people from all around the world, and also connect with highly educated and fascinating individuals. Also, Model UN calls for collaboration in conferences, which, of course, can be met with opposition. This allows students to get better at persuasion, recognizing perspectives, and leadership skills.
What fun things do you participate in at MUN?
The most engaging and fun thing at Model UN is that you get to collaborate with strangers from a variety of places. We get to travel to conferences and meet other students, which is a unique experience that many do not get. You have to beat the clock to solve world issues, and the stress and joy of collaborating with others is thrilling! Model UN is going to New York City for an upcoming conference, and we get to meet students from around the world. There, we will disregard anything we know and learn from each other to make the world a better place.
