St. Baldricks

St. Baldrick’s is one of the most important and largest foundations in the world, as approximately 400,000 children are life-threateningly diagnosed with cancer each year. There are over a dozen different kinds of cancer and St. Baldrick plays an extremely helpful role in helping out. Money is raised primarily through head shaving, donations, and many different varieties of fundraisers which then proceeds to be donated to major children’s hospitals, universities, and some of the most intelligent global research institutions in the world. For example, 66% of these funds are distributed to researchers, helping them have better access to finding cures for cancer, while the other percentage is spent on fundraising. Jackson advertises this program all over by selling merchandise to students throughout the school day and at sports events, and announces the importance of helping out in different ways to students and staff. Shaving your head isn’t the only way you can help, as there are so many other ways, and as a student attending Jackson, you can go to the St. Baldrick’s Jackson High Schools Team Page to donate; even the slightest amount of money helps https://www.stbaldricks.org/teams/mypage/139034/2025

During this past month, have you seen some of your peers holding sock children? You might have thought, “Is this child development?” Maybe even clothing construction. Well, you’re wrong, these beautiful sock children were for AP Psychology with Mrs. Morgan! Students created their own personal sock baby for their developmental unit. The students followed the life of their child, from infancy to old age. They documented every milestone of their lives in a scrapbook. This project helped the students learn and truly understand the many steps a child goes through to develop into an adult.

Adopt A Family

Around two months ago, Jackson High School began its annual Adopt a Family Fundraiser (AAF). This generous charity event helped bring Christmas cheer to the families in need. Similar to an angel tree, Jackson students were given a list of wishes from the families. They then attended Walmart to gather the necessities and gifts for each child, and made their dreams come true. In addition to shopping, the administration and student body donated various items to this cause. Items range from peanut butter to hand soap to help provide the necessities. After all of the items on the list were checked twice, volunteers from the student council and NHS helped wrap each present for the families. Once the wrapping concluded, the gifts were then organized by family to prepare for the family’s pick up. At pick up, the family members arrived to receive their gifts. However, they were delighted by the gift of ham, a box of various types of bread, a complementary backpack, and a cozy stuffed animal. The families greeted us with wonderful smiles that warmed hearts. This event evoked school and holiday spirit that brought together a community in order to make a family’s holiday bright.

The Bike Project

Charlotte RAKETICH, a Jackson High School senior, was brave and courageous enough to put herself out there for something she deeply cares about. Charlotte created her very own non-profit, The Bike Project: Pedaling Hope. Through an interview with her, we have gathered that she collects and builds bicycles. After the process is completed, she then donates the now restored bikes and helmets to young children within the community under the protection of county child protective services. This is such a heartwarming and inspiring organization that everyone could learn from. Charlotte is a charitable, generous person who will continue to grow. She is a perfect example of what a Polar Bear should be and how to effectively make a difference in your community!
